On Wednesday, Sept 21 a guided tour through the old town of Klagenfurt is offered by city councillor Dr. Dieter Jandl. This tour is accompanied by a choir. The tour starts at 17:00 and takes around 2 hours. (no costs, but registration necessary)

Passing through the romantic valley "Bärental" you reach a parking lot (1000m) from where the walking tour starts. The ascent to the alpine hut (1664m) takes less than two hours. From there you enjoy a panoramic view on the mountains and the highest peak of the Karawanken, the Hochstuhl. The castle of Hochosterwitz was first mentioned in the documents in 860. In 1570, Baron Georg Khevenhüller acquired the citadel. In the face of menacing Turkish invasions, he extended its fortifications by an armoury and 14 new gates built alongside the path from the valley up to the castle hill from 1570-1586. Such a fortress-way, protected at so many points, amounts to a unique rarity, not only as a matter of citadel-construction. Since those times the building has undergone no essential changes. From there, we pass over to the city of St. Veit/Glan. The charm of St. Veit is largely dominated by its old town centre. The old townwalls are preserved nearly completely, the moat serves now as a green belt. The two main squares are surrounded by impressive Renaissance and Baroque facades. Situated to the north-east of the Zollfeld region and the market town of Maria Saal, Magdalensberg Mountain is the scene of some of the most outstanding Austrian excavations including pre-Roman fortifications and a place of worship. In a depth of 120 metres below these fortifications, extensive ruins of late Celtic and early Roman settlements have been excavated. A late Gothic pilgrimage church dedicated to St. Helen and Mary Magdalene (first mentioned in 1262 and rebuilt in 1462) houses an altarpiece with side wings (1502) made by the woodcarving workshops at St. Veit. Next to the church is a pagan sacrificial altar. During the Celtic period it served commercial purposes (Regnum Noricum), while it was turned into an administrative centre after the peaceful occupation of the region (then called Noricum) by Roman settlers in 15 B.C.
